Blood in the Water: Ethnic Strife in 6th Century Maro
"...As the so-called "Bitch Queen" became a popular symbol of sea elven separatism in the latter half of the 6th century, worship of the saint steadily declined in mainland Selas—hastened, no doubt, by a series of cataclysmic weather phenomena which severely hindered travel throughout the Solesti. Despite the devotion of those sea elves loyal to Umberlee, they were not spared the devastation of the hurricane of 13,593, which mercilessly beat at the northern shore of Maro, making travel to and from Lageto nearly impossible.
When the populace of the city fled inland, Ylsinoran expatriates displaced many of the sea elven families who had maintained residences around the lagoon for centuries. In particular, those identified as part of a fringe religious movement called "Wavehearts" were driven from their residences around the lagoon and towards the coast, as other residents of Lageto (particularly Ylsinoran expatriates) alleged that the Wavehearts' heretical belief that Umberlee had renounced her divinity had brought the saint's wrath upon the entire city. Ultimately, most of the Wavehearts were driven into the sea, where (despite sea elven affinity for water) it is most likely that they perished against the rocky Maroan cliffs.
Can this forced exodus be classified as an attempt at sea elven extermination? Perhaps. It's undeniable that sea elves were the primary target of moon elven violence in this incident. However, it is also clear that accusations of heresy were a significant factor in the forced exodus of the Wavehearts. While uncommon (if not nonexistent) today, elves of mixed sea and moon ancestry are documented as being among the victims of the exodus due to their association with this heretical faction..."
